STRESS
What happens to our skin when we’re stressed?
Elevated levels of stress causes a chemical response in the body that makes the skin more sensitive and reactive. In addition to this, stress can delay the healing process, meaning spots and blemishes last longer than usual.

During stressful periods, your body kicks up its production of cortisol, which causes your glands to make more oil. This can result in an increase in clogged pores and acne.
6 essential tips to help treat stressed skin:
1. Simplify your routine (Skin Fasting)
Strip back to basics for a few days, use a gentle cleanser, a hydrating toner and a barrier repair Moisturiser. Some top rated products for this are the ceraVe hydrating cleanser, the light salon recovery pH toner, and la roche Posey barrier repair Moisturiser.
2. Hydrate inside and out
Drink more water ( a least 2 Litres a day) and eat water rich foods (cucumber, berries) and use humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, but always seal with a moisturiser. Inflamed and stressed skin benefits from a cooler environment, so store your Moisturiser or sheet masks in the Fridge.

3. Lifestyle reset
Prioritise your sleep, aiming for at least 7 hours of sleep a night will help to heal and regenerate your skin. It is also important to reduce your sugar and diary intake if you’re breakout prone. This is easier said than done when you are stressed and anxious – but focus on yourself, going for walks, breath work, making a plan, even if its just for a few days, can help calm your mind and bring a sense of reassurance.
4. Change your pillowcase and towels often
This might sound like an obvious one, but everyone needs that little reminder to change Their pillow cases every 2-3 days. Bacteria, product residue and sweat build up absorbs onto fabric quickly, Especially when your skin barrier is vulnerable. It is worth investing into a silk or bamboo pillow case – they are less Irritating on the skin. For towels / face cloths – PAT your skin with a clean dry towel and do not rub!
5. Consider teas and supplements
Teas and supplements can really support stressed skin by calming inflammation, balancing hormones, aiding detox, and nourishing your skin from within. Try chamomile tea(reduces cortisol), spearmint tea(good for hormonal acne), rooibos tea(soothes redness and supports skin barrier Function) or green tea (contains EGCG- a powerful antioxidant). For supplements, Omega 3 fatty acids, zinc and magnesium glycerinate all help with skin repair, sleep and breakouts.

6. Cut fragrance from everything (not just skincare)
When your skin is stressed, even low Levels of Fragrance (natural or synthetic) can Trigger Irritation, sensitivity or flare ups – especially if your barrier is compromised.
